Our History
1979
Founded
Apio, Inc. is founded by five growers in the Santa Maria Valley, CA. The name “Apio” means “celery” in Spanish.
1982
Innovative Process
Apio builds a prototype broccoli-packing trailer, a revolutionary concept fueling growth to one of the largest broccoli shippers in the world.
1990
Broccoligate
Apio receives worldwide exposure when President George Bush banned broccoli from Air Force One. In response, Apio sent a truckload of broccoli to the White House and asked the President to reconsider his decision. The gift resulted in an avalanche of press coverage.
1999
Apio Acquisition
Landec Corporation (NASDAQ: LNDC) acquires Apio, creating a vertically integrated business.
2004
BreatheWay® Technology
Apio completes the first licensing agreement of its BreatheWay packaging technology to Chiquita for the Chiquita-to-go banana program.
2011
Windset Farms Investment
Apio invests in a 20% ownership of Windset Farms, the leading hydroponic greenhouse grower in North America with a commitment to sustainability. Curation Foods currently has 27% ownership in Windset Farms.
2012
GreenLine Acquisition
Apio broadens its packaged fresh vegetable offering to include a full line of green bean products and secures a national fresh food supply chain. Adding to its refrigerated processing center in California, Apio now has refrigerated facilities throughout the northeastern United States and a full fleet of refrigerated trucks to ensure excellent customer service throughout North America.
2017
O Olive Oil and Vinegar® Acquisition
O is a premium producer of California specialty olive oils and wine vinegars with 100% clean and fully traceable ingredients based in Sonoma County, California.
2017
Innovative Salad Packaging
Eat Smart enters the single-serve salad segment with Salad Shake Ups™, featuring 100% clean ingredients, unique flavor profiles, plant proteins and a patented bowl design that makes it easy to eat with no mess.
2018
Eat Smart at Home
Eat Smart launches an online store that makes it easy for consumers to have access to fresh vegetables delivered straight to their home. Initially serving selected zip codes on the West Coast.
2018
Yucatan Foods Acquisition
Yucatan Foods is a leading manufacturer of guacamole and other avocado products with two top-selling brands - Yucatan and Cabo Fresh. All guacamole is made with hand-scooped, Haas avocados and a 100% clean ingredient label.
2019
Landec completes the transformation of its food business from a packaged fresh vegetable company to an innovative natural foods company and consolidates its portfolio of six brands (Eat Smart, O, Now Planting, Yucatan, Cabo Fresh and BreatheWay) under one parent company, with a shared mission of providing access of fresh, plant-based foods to as many people as possible and a commitment to sustainable practices.
